Sea Level Rise

The UKNCSP Sea Level Rise Working Group is dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of sea level change and its impacts, and supporting evidence-based policy and decision making through coordinated interdisciplinary research and stakeholder engagement. The group brings together expertise from across the UK to evaluate the causes, projections, and consequences of sea level rise in both global and UK-specific contexts.

By fostering collaboration and shared learning, the working group seeks to strengthen the UK’s capability to respond to the challenges posed by rising seas. This includes contributing to improved modelling, observations, impact assessments, and adaptation planning. The group does not just foster the generation of new science—it also plays a key role in ensuring this knowledge is translated into meaningful guidance for decision-makers.

To achieve its goals, the Sea Level Rise Working Group supports a range of activities, including community and stakeholder workshops, thematic sessions at scientific meetings, and collaborative training opportunities such as PhD studentships and secondments across the UKNCSP network. The Working Group also contributes to the wider UKNCSP strategy, seminar series, and communications, including engagement of government and other stakeholders through UKNCSP Knowledge Integration activities. Through these efforts, the working group helps ensure the UK remains at the forefront of sea level science and coastal resilience planning.
