Climate Interventions

Climate Interventions
The UKNCSP Climate Interventions Working Group acts as a focal point for synthesising work from across the Partnership to improve our understanding of current and emerging climate intervention methods, identify knowledge gaps, and support decision-making. Our primary goal is to provide impartial, evidence-based scientific insight that can inform responsible and effective policymaking in this complex area. The group recognises the increasing attention that climate interventions are receiving in light of escalating climate risks and is committed to ensuring that any decisions are informed by the best available science.
Importantly, the group recognises that any climatic intervention cannot, and should not, be considered a substitute for rapid and deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, and it does not advocate for the deployment of any particular intervention approach. Instead, it provides objective assessments of the scientific knowledge surrounding proposed interventions, covering both nature-based methods such as coastal blue carbon initiatives, afforestation, and land-use change, as well as more engineering-based techniques like Solar Radiation Modification (SRM), Direct Air Capture with Carbon Storage (DACCS), Direct Ocean Capture, Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement, and Enhanced Rock Weathering.
By analysing the potential benefits, limitations, and risks associated with each strategy, the working group aims to improve our understanding of their feasibility, scalability, and implications. Through cross-centre collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge-sharing, the group supports the development of a transparent, scientifically robust evidence base that can guide the UK’s response to climate intervention opportunities and challenges. It also contributes to shaping national research priorities and building capacity for future assessments, ensuring the UK is prepared to make informed decisions in this rapidly evolving area.
