Climate Modelling

The UKNCSP Climate Modelling Working Group is responsible for establishing and delivering a coordinated strategic approach to the development, evaluation, and application of UK climate models. The group oversees the delivery of major shared modelling programmes, including those exploiting new technologies such as AI and machine learning, and ensures they are aligned with national research priorities and stakeholder needs.

A key aspect of the group’s work is the co-design of climate modelling infrastructure and data systems—ensuring these are tailored to meet the evolving requirements of the research community, policymakers, and other end users. The group also plays a proactive role in building capacity across the climate modelling landscape by expanding and upskilling the community of model developers and users in the UK.

Promoting strong partnerships is central to the group’s mission. It actively identifies opportunities for joint working and supports collaborative projects that bring together institutions, disciplines, and expertise. In doing so, the group helps to amplify the impact of climate modelling across a wide range of applications—to support adaptation to our changing climate, to inform national climate policy, and to contribute to international assessments and scenario development.

By championing the role of climate models in understanding and responding to climate issue, the working group ensures that the UK modelling effort remains at the forefront of global science and continues to deliver high-value, decision-relevant insights.
