Climate Observations

Climate Observations

The UKNCSP Climate Observations Working Group plays a key role in coordinating a wide range of climate monitoring and observational activities across the Partnership, both within the UK and globally, drawing on the breadth of existing surface, atmospheric, marine and polar measurements. Our core aims are (1) to collectively articulate the breadth and depth of observational capabilities across the Partnership, and (2) to gather, prioritise and communicate requirements for both existing and future observational data, ensuring these reflect the full range of climate science activities under UKNCSP. The group champions the vital role of underpinning science in generating and sustaining high-quality climate observations and the development of long-term climate data records that are the foundation for monitoring changes to the climate over time.

The working group draws on, integrates and supplements work already undertaken by other initiatives and organisations. We actively engage with national and international stakeholders to communicate observation requirements and ensure alignment with the partners’ strategic goals. The working group works also fosters collaborations across UKNCSP, focusing on  targeted, well-defined areas of climate observational product development.

Another key focus is ensuring that UKNCSP observational data and insights are effectively shared with stakeholders and decision-makers. This includes engaging with platforms like the Met Office Global Climate Dashboard, as well as supporting major assessments such as the IPCC, IPBES, State of Climate reports and the Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA).

Through collaboration and coordination, the working group seeks to optimise the collective impact of observational efforts across the Partnership, and to ensure that robust, policy-relevant climate information is accessible and actionable.
